The state of Tennessee requires that those who want to work as a certified nursing assistant take an approved training program and pass the competency exams.
The school you decide to enroll with for your training must offer at least 75 hours of instruction which includes 16 hours of competency skill instruction. During your clinical skills you will be taught 25 separate nursing related competencies. You will needs this experience both on the job and during the certification exams.
The competency exams are both a written theoretical portion and a demonstrative test. You must score 70% or better on the written test to qualify as well as successfully demonstrate 5 skills during the manual test. Those who pass are included on the registry and eligible to work as a nurse aide for a period of two years.
