To become a nursing assistant, you must be able to complete a CNA training program that is approved by the state. Approved training schools offer to teach 25 basic nursing skills in their curriculum for at least 75 hours worth of instruction by an experienced registured nurse. You will also be taught a variety of topics such as infection control, patient’s rights, emergency procedures, safety protocol and communication skills.
Those who pass their training can apply to take the license exams. The exams will test you on 5 skills that you were taught during your school classes. Those who pass the competency exam are placed on the nurse aide registry. Entry on the registry is good for 24 months. Once you are on the registry you are eligible to work in long term health care facilities such as nursing homes, and health care facilities.
